9/11/2023 0 Comments Sheffield multi tool reviewThe pliers open a bit more than the Schrade, so that's also nice. It folds up more compactly than the Schrade, so that's nice. Snips right through wire coat hangers with ease. It does make short work of hard fencing wire though. It can't cut 24ga or 16ga with thick insulation. It can't even fit 12ga stranded wire in the cutter, much less Romex. The cutter itself works really well on zip ties and hard wire, but not so great on soft wire. The wire cutter portion intrudes into the center gripping oval, which is not ideal. There's also significant handle flex when really bearing down. For general use they're fine, the tools are flat enough to make it not hard on the palm and fingers, but once you start bearing down it's downright painful. The handles aren't that comfortable to put force onto. The happens on both the tweaked and untweaked sides, so it's not due to existing damage. Some of the tools require siginficant force to unlock, even though another tool next to them is pushing the lock bar away. You have to half-open another tool to unlock one that is fully extended, and this isn't a highly precisely machined system. It's that they're all difficult to extract, and difficult to unlock. The tool quality isn't really the issue at hand, to be honest. I'd rather have had some other tool in there. However, THREE different flat head drivers seems like a bit much to me. Big and beefy and robust and very well-formed. The gasket scraper is a nice touch, not many tools have that. The serrated blade makes very short work of paracord. The file is aggressive and three-sided, and is made from actual file material. The wood saw is one of the better saws I've used, making a nice wide kerf and not getting stuck at all. The clip point blade in mine appears to still have the factory edge, and it's still sharp enough to cut receipt paper, as is the small sheepsfoot blade. They're ALL locking tools, which is nice. That said, the tools in this Schrade aren't bad at all. The Schrade has higher quality tools IMO, especially that bit driver. It's finnicky to close, just like the Schrade ST5E. Not comfortable to use on a garden hose, but for other pliering tasks it seems pretty decent. The pliers open very wide, and can handle bigger tasks than most. It's a large tool, and seems robust and well made. One of the handles isn't entirely square anymore. I bought a Sheffield 12020 on eBay for a song, and it just arrived today.
